Kaiako will note that are no stanines for the Junior STwE assessment. This quite deliberate for a number of reasons:

  1. This assessment does not test a student's position in the Science curriculum. It tests their ability to think with evidence, a skill arguably useful across any subject, but we have provided science contexts with which to examine these skills. Giving specific benchmarks for the scores might lead teachers to misinterpret the purpose of the test.
  2. By providing Low - Middle - High as categories to group scale scores together, teachers are better able to group students around what their next steps might be in developing thinking strategies.

The use of the Science Capabilities website will be useful here for finding resources/units of work to further build student skills in this area.

The use of the ARBs will support teachers with specific activities for specific capabilities.
