PAT Tuhituhi Te Pihinga tasks are marked manually using the PAT Tuhituhi Te Pihinga rubric. There is one rubric to be used across the four genre.

The  first rubric contains five elements that research says are crucial for ākonga to master, to become successful writers. This builds on the PAT Tuhituhi rubric, with greater attention explicitly given to the writing skills and capabilities that are a focus of early writing instruction and development. These are the same elements that the Year 5-10 writing samples are marked against which will provide a good way to track student progression over time.

The second rubric has been developed for only Year 3-4 as at this age they are still learning specific mechanics of writing and kaiako need to be able to track their progress in these skills.

Within each element, each score category is further illustrated by a descriptor. Progressions within each element represent a conceptual progression of writing skill development. They do not represent year levels or curriculum stages.
